What are wrinkles and what causes them?

Wrinkles are creases, folds or ridges in the skin. Most commonly, wrinkles appear as we get older. The first wrinkles to appear on our face tend to occur as a result of facial expressions. Sun damage, smoking, dehydration, some medications, as well as a number of other factors may also cause wrinkles to develop. Wrinkles are an inevitable part of the natural aging process. As we become older our skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic. Our skin’s ability to protect itself from damage is also reduced as we age. Eventually, wrinkles, creases and lines form on our skin. Apart from the factors mentioned above, a person’s genetic makeup also influences how wrinkly we become, and when and where wrinkles start appearing.

How can wrinkles be treated?

Firstly, wrinkles can be prevented by using a good sunscreen. By protecting against UV radiation, it is possible to reduce further premature damage to the skin.

Expression lines are generally treated with Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A).

What is Botox?

Botox is composed of a natural, purified protein that relaxes the muscles causing the compression of the skin (wrinkles). It has been used for over 25 years to reduce unwanted muscle activity, and is considered safe and effective.

It is most commonly injected in the muscles between the eyebrows and around the eyes, whilst other areas, example around the mouth, can also be treated. Botox generally lasts for about 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer. By stopping the movement/expressions that cause wrinkles, Botox injections can also prevent static lines from becoming deeper by stopping the compression of skin.

If static lines or lines at rest are already present, then Botox injections generally do not reverse these and Dermal Fillers will be needed. However, the application of Botox injections at regular intervals gives the skin a rest from compression, and often static wrinkles may improve slightly over time. Botox can be used in conjunction with Dermal Fillers to help treat both static and dynamic wrinkles taking a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation.

What does treatment involve?

Treatments with Botox injections involve having a number of small injections in the treated areas.  The aesthetic doctor will decide how to precisely inject for best results. The process takes only a short time to perform. The needles used are extremely fine, and only a small volume is injected. The discomfort experienced is minimal and very well tolerated.

After the injections, you will gradually notice relaxation of the muscles treated. This can start at 2-3 days, but may take up to two weeks to be very noticeable. Normal activities may be resumed after treatment. However, you will be instructed not to exercise or touch the treated areas for 4 hours.

What other treatments are available with Botox?

Our doctors can target various medical conditions through other applications of Botox, offering relief for a variety of neurological and muscular conditions. All details will be discussed during a personal medical consultation. Here are some of the notable indications:

  • Chronic Migraine: Botox helps prevent chronic migraines by reducing the frequency and severity of headaches.

  • Cervical Dystonia: Alleviates muscle stiffness and discomfort in the neck caused by involuntary contractions.

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: Relieves pain and discomfort in the jaw by relaxing the muscles.

  • Facial Tics and Hemifacial Spasm: Decreases the frequency and intensity of involuntary facial movements.

  • Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating): Effective in controlling excessive sweating, particularly in areas such as the underarms, hands, feet, and face.
